DESCRIPTION

On an HP ProLiant server with a RAID 1 or RAID 1+0 set configured on the embedded HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller, if the server is powered off while a hard drive rebuild is in progress and a physical hard drive in the RAID set is replaced while the server is off, the hard drive rebuild process may not restart at zero percent when the server is powered back on.

This will occur if the drive is replaced with the system off and the previous rebuild progress has been active for at least ten minutes. If the drive is replaced while the server is on and the HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller Hot Plug Advance Pack license key is installed, the issue will not occur.

On the subsequent boot, after the destination/replacement drive is replaced, the controller does not validate the previous rebuild status and assumes the same drive is present. As a result, the rebuild continues from the previous location instead of starting over.

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant 100 G6 or G7 series server with a RAID 1 or RAID 1+0 set configured on the embedded HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller and running any of the following Windows or Linux drivers:

  • HP ProLiant Smart Array Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver for Windows Server 2003 Version 6.14 (or earlier).
  • HP ProLiant Smart Array Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver for Windows Server 2008 Version 6.16 (or earlier).
  • HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller Driver for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Version 1.2.6-11 (or earlier).
  • HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller Driver for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Version 1.2.6-12 (or earlier).
  • HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller Driver for SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 Version 1.2.6-11 (or earlier).
  • HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller Driver for SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 11 Version 1.2.6-11 (or earlier).

RESOLUTION

To prevent this from occurring, upgrade the HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller Driver as follows:

Note: The updated Linux and Windows Server 2003 drivers will be available in late June 2012.

HP ProLiant Smart Array Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver for Windows 2008 Version 6.18 (or later) - Smart Component cp016999: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-windows/p1132108511/v75821

HP ProLiant Smart Array Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver for Windows 2008 x64 Editions Version 6.18 (or later) - Smart Component cp016998: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-windows/p2078115731/v75820

As a workaround until the driver upgrade is installed, perform one of the following steps:

  • Install the HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller Hot Plug Advance Pack license key as short term workaround solution to allow for replacing the failed drive online and to perform the rebuild reliably. This is supported mainly on Hot Plug server models. The Advance Pack is available for purchase at the following URL:

    http://www.hp.com/go/sataraid

Note: This option is the most reliable method to ensure a good/complete backup does occur (be sure the drive is replaced with the system/OS online. This will ensure that the rebuild starts at zero percent.)

OR

  • Prior to a physical drive failure in the Smart Array B110i Controller RAID volume (volume state OK), add another physical drive as an online spare drive to the RAID 1 set configuration. This will allow the rebuild to be performed on the spare drive. Replace the failed drive after the rebuild completes on the spare drive.

This advisory will be updated when additional information becomes available.
