Scan to a Computer, Email, or Memory Card for HP Photosmart 7520 Printers

This document is for HP Photosmart 7520 and 7525 e-All-in-One printers.

Learn how to scan a photo or a document using the options available on the printer control panel.

Scan to a computer

To scan a photo or document from the control panel to your computer, make sure that the computer is on, the full-feature printer driver is installed, and the HP printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable or over your local wireless network.

Step 1: Activate the scan connection to the computer (Windows only)

To send scans from your printer to a computer over a wireless network, you must enable the Activate Scan to Computer connection from the HP software after the computer restarts, hibernates, or enters sleep mode (the hard disk shuts down).

NOTE: This step is not necessary for Mac operating systems. Skip to the next step.
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. On the computer, open the list of installed programs, click the HP folder, and then click the name of your printer to open the HP Printer Assistant software.

  3. Under Scanner Actions , click Manage Scan to Computer , and then click Enable .

  4. Click the box next to Automatically Start Scan to Computer when I log into Windows to enable automatic activation of the Scan to Computer connection.

Step 2: Load the item on the scanner glass or into the document feeder

You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray.

Scanner glass (documents or photos) :

Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.

ADF (documents only) :

Place the item into the document feeder tray on the top of the printer with the printed side facing up and the top edge going into the tray first. Adjust the paper width guides to fit the item.

CAUTION: Do not load photos in the ADF. Use the scanner glass to prevent damage to photos.

Step 3: Send the scan to the computer

Scan the document or photo and send it to a designated folder on the computer.

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, touch Scan ( ).

  2. Touch the Computer icon to scan to the connected computer.

  3. Touch the name of the computer that you want to save the scan to.

  4. Touch Photo or Document , depending on your scan job.

  5. Touch the File Type that you want to scan to, and then touch OK .

  6. Touch Scan . The printer scans the document or image, and then saves it to the destination folder on the computer specified in the scan settings.

Scan directly to email (wireless Internet connections only)

Automatically send scanned photos and documents to one or more email addresses directly from the printer control panel.

Step 1: Prepare for the scan job

To use the scan to email feature, make sure that the printer is connected to the wireless network and that Web Services is enabled.

  1. Make sure that the printer is turned on and connected to your local wireless network with an active Internet connection. Touch the Wireless icon ( ) on the printer control panel to check the connection status.

  2. Touch the Web Services icon ( ) to confirm that Web Services is activated on your printer.

    NOTE: For additional information, go to How do I enable Web Services? .

Step 2: Add your email address to the printer

Enter your email address to set up scan to email and retrieve your PIN (password).

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, touch Scan ( ).

  2. Touch the Email icon, and then touch Continue .

  3. Touch the Email dialogue box, type your email address, and then touch Continue . A PIN number is sent to the email address entered.

  4. Log into to your email account and note the PIN number in the email sent from eprintcenter@hp.com .

  5. On the printer control panel, touch Continue , and then select a security option on the Remember Me Information screen.

    • Select Auto-login to store the PIN. This is a low security option best used when you are the only person using the printer.

    • Select Store Email to store the email address, but not the PIN. The PIN must be entered each time you scan to email. Use this more secure option if multiple people use the printer to scan.

Step 3: Load the item on the scanner glass or into the document feeder

You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray.

Scanner glass (documents or photos) :

Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.

ADF (documents only) :

Place the item into the document feeder tray on the top of the printer with the printed side facing up and the top edge going into the tray first. Adjust the paper width guides to fit the item.

Step 4: Scan the document or photo to the email account

Select your scan type and enter the email address you want to send the scan to.

  1. On the printer control panel, touch Photo or Document , depending on the item you are scanning.

  2. Enter the email that you want to send the scan to and the PIN that was sent to your email account, and then touch Log In .

  3. On the Review Information screen, touch Modify Recipients to add or select additional email addresses, and then touch Continue .

  4. Touch Scan to Email to complete the scan.

  5. Return to your email account to open the email sent from eprintcenter@hp.com . The scanned item is attached to the email.

Scan to a USB drive

Scan a photo or document and save it on a USB drive.

Step 1: Load the item on the scanner glass or into the document feeder

You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray.

Scanner glass (documents or photos) :

Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.

ADF (documents only) :

Step 2: Scan to the USB drive

Select the USB drive, and then scan from the printer control panel.

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, touch Scan ( ).

  2. Insert a USB drive into the printer's USB port.

  3. Touch the USB drive icon to save the scan file to the connected USB drive.

  4. Touch the name of the destination folder that you want to save the scan to.

  5. Touch Photo or Document , depending on your scan job.

  6. Touch the File Type that you want to scan to, and then touch OK .

  7. Touch Scan . The printer scans the document or image, and then saves it to the destination folder on the USB drive.

Scan to a memory card

Scan a photo or document and save it as a file on a memory card.

Step 1: Load the item on the scanner glass or into the document feeder

You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray.

Scanner glass (documents or photos) :

Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.

ADF (documents only) :

Step 2: Scan to the memory card

Select the memory card, and then scan from the printer control panel.

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, touch Scan ( ).

  2. Insert a memory card into the printer's memory card slot.

  3. Touch the Memory card icon.

  4. Touch the name of the destination folder that you want to save the scan to.

  5. Touch Photo or Document , depending on your scan job.

  6. Touch the File Type that you want to scan to, and then touch OK .

  7. Touch Scan . The printer scans the document or image, and then saves it to the destination folder on the memory card.

What if I do not receive a scan I sent to email?

Try these troubleshooting tips if the email with the attached scan does not arrive in your email inbox.

  • Your email service might block or quarantine the email from epintcenter@hp.com as spam. If the email is in your spam folder, unblock epintcenter@hp.com or mark it an allowed sender.

  • Scan to email might fail from certain email service providers. Try using a different email account to send the scan to.

How do I enable Web Services?

Web Services must be turned on to use the scan to email feature, enable automatic firmware updates, and use other HP cloud printing services.

  1. On the printer control panel, touch the Web Services icon ( ).

  2. Touch Yes to accept the terms of use and to enable Web Services.

    NOTE: If Remove Web Services displays, then Web Services is already enabled.
  3. Touch Yes to check for updates and to enable future automatic firmware updates.

  4. Optional : Use the information page that prints to register with HP Connected and set up your printer with the ePrint service.

What if I get a connection error when I try to scan?
