HP LaserJet Pro - Install the print or scan software on a Windows 8 computer using HP Smart Install

Introduction

This document provides download and installation instructions for LaserJet printers and MFPs that have HP Smart Install technology. Normally, when a printer/MFP with HP Smart Install is connected to the computer via a network or USB cable, Smart Install automatically recognizes the device and quickly installs the drivers and other software.

Applicable products

This document applies to the following printers:

  • HP LaserJet 100 color MFP M175

  • HP TopShot LaserJet Pro M275

  • HP LaserJet Pro 300 color M351

  • HP LaserJet Pro 300 color MFP M375

  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 color M451

  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 color MFP M475

Install the software on a wired network

  1. Connect a network cable to the printer/MFP and a network port, and make sure the computer has access to the network.

  2. Allow a few minutes for an IP address to be assigned to the printer.

  3. On the printer control panel, touch the network button to display the printer IP address.

  4. On the computer, open a Web browser, type the IP address in the URL address bar, and then press Enter to open the HP Embedded Web Server.

  5. Click the HP Smart Install tab and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

If the HP Smart Install program fails, disconnect the network cable, turn the printer off and then on again, and then install the software using the CD or obtain the latest Full solution from www.hp.com .

Install the software using a USB cable

When you connect the USB cable from the computer to a LaserJet with Smart Install, the device is detected and the drivers and software installer automatically starts.

  1. Make sure both the computer and the printer/MFP are powered on.

    NOTE: HP Smart Install will not start if the computer is turned off when you connect the USB cable from the computer to the printer/MFP, or if Smart Install has been disabled from the control panel.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the printer and then to the computer.

    NOTE: The HP Smart Install program might take a few minutes to start. If HP Smart Install does not start automatically, AutoPlay might be disabled on the computer. Browse to My Computer, double-click the HP Smart Install CD drive, and then double-click the SISetup.exe file to run the program and install the printer. If you cannot find the HP Smart Install CD drive, disconnect the USB cable, and install the software using the CD or obtain the latest Full solution from www.hp.com .
  3. When you receive the Smart Install prompt, click Yes , and wait for the files to extract and the installation to start.

  4. Select I have reviewed and accept the installation agreements and click Next .

  5. If you receive a prompt to insert the CD, do one of the following:

  6. Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation.

  7. When you receive the Microsoft prompt One of your apps needs this to run , make sure you are connected to the internet, make sure Windows Update is enabled, and then allow the update to install.

    NOTE: If you do not receive a prompt, obtain the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 at Microsoft's Web site Non-HP site .
  8. When the wizard restarts, follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation.

  9. Print a test page.

Install the software using the CD

If you received a prompt to insert the CD and you have the software CD that came with the printer, follow these steps:

NOTE: If the HP Smart Install program failed previously, disconnect the USB cable, turn the printer off and then on again, and then insert the product CD into your computer. Connect the cable only when the software prompts you.
  1. Locate the HP software CD.

    Select Insert the CD to continue with the full installation , insert the CD, and then click OK to install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and continue the full software installation.

  2. Click Run Autorun.exe .

  3. To get the additional software components that are not loaded with HP Smart Install, select Add additional software to install additional components, such as the user guide.

  4. Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation.

  5. Print a test page and try to scan.

Install the software from hp.com

If you do not have the CD that came with the printer, or the CD installation did not work, follow these steps:

  1. Go to HP Support & Drivers , and then select Drivers & Software .

  2. Type the printer name / number in the Enter a product name/number search box, and then click Search or press Enter .

  3. Select the LaserJet model from the search results.

  4. Select the language from the drop-down list and then select the operating system.

  5. Locate the full feature software and driver under the Software or Driver section.

    NOTE: If you receive a prompt to install .Net, click OK and follow the steps to install it. If you receive an error message that .Net 3.5.1 is not available or the installation fails when trying to install, go to Microsoft's Web site Non-HP site to obtain Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.
  6. Click Download , click Run , and then wait for the download to complete.

    NOTE: Downloading a full feature or full solution driver can take some time. Please allow sufficient time for the download to complete.
  7. Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation.

  8. Print a test page.
