HP LaserJet 5L and 6L Printer Families - Error Light Remains Lit, False Paper Jam (Resetting Paper Sensors)

ISSUE: The error light on the HP LaserJet 5L or 6L printer remains on (indicating a possible paper jam), even though there is no paper caught inside the printer, and the paper input bin is full.
SOLUTION: In some cases the error light can remain on (indicating a possible paper jam) if a paper sensor in the HP LaserJet 5L or 6L printer has become stuck. Follow the instructions below. (See Figure 1 for details.)

Part 1

WARNING: To avoid the possibility of electric shock, disconnect the printer from its power source before troubleshooting.
  1. Open the printer door.

  2. Remove the print cartridge.

  3. Locate the gray pick-up roller in the back center of the printer. To the left of the pick-up roller is a black plastic column with an arrow pointing to the roller. At the bottom of the column in the opening there is a paper sensor.

CAUTION: Do not touch the transfer roller (black spongy roller at base of printer cavity). Oil from the skin can contaminate the roller and cause print quality issues.
  4. Use the tip of a pen, pencil, or paper clip and gently move the sensor.

  5. Replace the print cartridge.

  6. Close the printer door.

  7. Reconnect the printer to its power source and verify that there is paper loaded in the paper-input bin.

  8. If the error light remains on, proceed to Part 2.

Part 2

WARNING: To avoid the possibility of electric shock, disconnect the printer from its power source before troubleshooting.
  1. In the front of the printer, with the printer door closed, locate the lower paper exit slot. Look closely in the middle of the exit slot to locate a flat, white bracket. Directly below the bracket is a black square. In the center of the black square is a paper sensor.

  2. Use the tip of a pen, pencil, or paper clip and gently move the sensor.

  3. Reconnect the printer to its power source and verify that there is paper loaded in the paper-input bin.

  4. If the error light remains on, see the note below.

NOTE: If the error light remains on after following the procedure, disconnect the parallel cable and plug the power cable directly into a wall outlet. If the error light still remains lit, the printer needs to be serviced.
